Children’s Books Poster Series

A series of three typographic posters designed around the first chapters to Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and Peter Pan.

I designed a series of posters featuring three classic children’s books: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum; and Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up (actually the name of the 1904 play; the book was officially published as Peter and Wendy in 1911) by J. M. Barrie. Each poster includes the full text of the first chapter, the original publisher, the year of first publication, and a highlight of the first sentence.

A lock-up of wood and metal letters, spelling out the full names of the three books.

The title arrangements on each poster were inspired by setting real metal and wood type.

The full text of the first chapter of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland appears on a cream-colored 11x17 poster; there is a long break in the text to represent the rabbit hole Alice falls down

“Chapter One: Down the Rabbit-Hole” from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, first published in 1865 by Macmillan Publishers. “Alice was beginning to get very tired…”

The full text of the first chapter of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is arranged on a cream-colored 11x17 poster to look like a tornado

“Chapter One: The Cyclone” from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, first published in 1900 by George M. Hill Company. “Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies…”

The full text of the first chapter of Peter Pan is arranged on a cream-colored 11x17 poster to look like a cityscape; the silhouette of a little boy, colored bright green, is flying above the city

“Chapter One: Peter Breaks Through” from Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie, first published in 1911 by Hodder and Stoughton Publishing House; use of 1904 play title (Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up). “All children, except one, grow up…”
